The image most often shared as evidence comes from STS-88, the first space shuttle mission to the International Space Station. During that mission, astronauts Jerry Ross and James Newman worked outside Endeavour to help connect the station's Unity and Zarya modules.

You may have seen Black Knight timelines stretching back more than a century. Read one from beginning to end, and it can seem as though people kept discovering the same mysterious visitor.

Looking at each event separately gives you a clearer picture. Some involve real observations, others involve disputed reports, and none establishes that the object in the 1998 photograph was an ancient alien spacecraft.

Nikola Tesla's Unusual Radio Signals

In 1899, Nikola Tesla picked up unusual signals during experiments in Colorado Springs. He wondered whether they could be messages from another planet and later wrote about the possibility of communication between worlds.

Jørgen Hals and the Echoes That Arrived Late

In 1927, Norwegian radio enthusiast Jørgen Hals noticed something puzzling while listening to a Dutch short-wave station. Its signal seemed to repeat several seconds after the original transmission, like an echo taking an unexpectedly long route home.

Hals contacted physicist Carl Størmer, who investigated the phenomenon with Balthasar van der Pol. These observations became part of the study of long-delayed echoes: radio signals that return after an unusually long pause.

University of Oslo physicist Sverre Holm has discussed several possible physical explanations. Radio waves can take complicated paths through the region around Earth, so an unexpected delay alone doesn't establish an artificial source.

The proposed alien connection came much later. In 1973, Scottish author Duncan Lunan examined reported echo delays and suggested they could contain a star map pointing to Epsilon Boötis. He proposed that a probe from that star system might be near the Moon.

The 1954 Reports of Unknown Satellites

In 1954, UFO author Donald Keyhoe told newspapers that the U.S. Air Force had detected two objects orbiting Earth. Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, wouldn't launch until 1957, so the timing made the claim especially interesting.

The reports didn't provide verifiable evidence of alien satellites. Critics also noted that Keyhoe was promoting a UFO book around the same time, which gives you another reason to examine the claims carefully.

Later Black Knight timelines included the episode as an early detection. But a newspaper report about an alleged observation doesn't establish that an object was tracked, much less that it was the same one photographed in 1998.

The 1960 Satellite Scare and Its Follow-Up

Early in 1960, the U.S. Navy detected an unfamiliar object in a roughly polar orbit. With Cold War tensions running high, the possibility of an unknown Soviet satellite attracted attention.

TIME's own follow-up reported that officials identified it as the Discoverer 5 recovery capsule. Its rocket had apparently pushed it into a higher orbit when it was meant to bring it back to Earth.

Where Did the Black Knight Name Come From?

There was a real Black Knight rocket. Britain used it during the late 1950s and 1960s to study how vehicles behaved when reentering Earth's atmosphere, supporting work associated with the Blue Streak missile program.

As discoveryuk.com explains, that program is one suggested source of the legend's name. The precise origin of the name in the alien-satellite story remains unclear.

The British test rocket never placed a satellite in orbit. Sharing its name with the legend doesn't connect it to Tesla's radio experiments or the object photographed by Endeavour.

It is, admittedly, a memorable name. An abandoned thermal cover would probably struggle to attract quite the same following.

An object can remain in orbit for a long time under the right conditions. Its altitude and the forces acting on it matter, so simply calling something ancient doesn't rule out an orbit.

At the shuttle's altitude, though, traces of atmosphere create drag. Over time, that resistance changes an object's orbit and brings it lower. The International Space Station needs periodic boosts to make up for this effect.

That creates a problem for the idea of an abandoned object spending 13,000 years at a similar altitude. Keeping it there would require an explanation for how it maintained its orbit, along with evidence that it actually did so.

What the Evidence Tells Us
